Creating a custom list BACK TO TOP

Creating your lists on Kumbooka is simple.  First, you need to ensure that you are on your own profile page, so go ahead and click on the "My Stuff" option on the main menu bar at the top of the page.

Next, scroll down through your profile page until you come towards the bottom where you will see your library container.  To the top right of the container, you will see a green coloured button marked "New".

Clicking the "New" button launches the "Create New Category" Wizard.  We will use this wizard to create a new miscellaneous list, so go ahead and click the "New" button now.

In the "Create New Category" wizard, you will need to do the following, select a list type, type a name for your list, give it a short description, assign a privacy level to your list and then select an avatar for the list.  So let's go through these step by step.

  • Select List Type - There are three types of lists that you can create on Kumbooka, Miscellaneous List, Wish List and Storage Boxes.  These classifications make no difference to the type of content you can store in the list, they are simply there to help you organise your lists better, and will only appear under the appropriate tabs on your profile page.
  • List Name - Simply a descriptive name that will remind you of the content of the list, when searching at a later date.
  • Description - An opportunity to give a little more detail about the list.  For example, if you were to create a storage box on Kumbooka, you might want to put the location of the physical box in the description.  So if you were to fill a cardboard box with books, and put it in the attic, then when you create this box on Kumbooka, you could put in the description, "box is in the attic in far right corner".
  • List Privacy Settings - You need to give this option a bit of thought as these options determine who will be able to view the content of your list on Kumbooka.  So if you want to keep the list private, then make sure you mark it private by selecting the radio button for "Just me - Private".
  • Choose an avatar for your list - Finally, scroll through the list of available avatars, there are many already in the list, with more being added regularly.
Once you have worked your way through all of the above steps, simply click the "created list" button on the wizard to create the list.  Now that you have created the list, check out our FAQ on adding items from search results to lists.

Adding items from search results to lists BACK TO TOP

Once you have created your first list on Kumbooka, you will be eager to start adding items to your list.  There are different methods of adding items to your list on Kumbooka, but here, we are going to look at adding items from search results.

Use the search box to find something you own.  You can do this by either typing a bar-code from a book or DVD, however we are going to use a keyword to generate a broader search.  The keyword we are going to use is "Grisham" and among other things, this will return all the novels written by the author, John Grisham, so there should be plenty of results returned to us.

In the search box, simply type the word, Grisham, and then press the return key on your keyboard.

Pressing return will commit the word "Grisham" to our search engine, and a new page of results, similar to the image below, will shortly be returned to you.

Search through the results until you find the book, or books that you wish to add to your new list.  For every book you wish to add, click on the large button titled "add to my collection".  Clicking this button will open a new pop-up window where you can add the item to your list.

When adding an item, you have a few options which we will explain here.

  • The "add to my collection" action box expands to show you the available choices.  These choices differ slightly, depending on the category of the item you are adding e.g. if you are adding a book, you will have options such as "Reading now" however, if you are adding a DVD, these options will change to "Watching now".
  • You can choose to do nothing with this action box, and still add the item to your list, however, this will not actually add the item to your collection. One downside to not adding an item to your collection, is that Kumbooka does not list you as owning or wishing to own the item and as such, other users on Kumbooka will be unable to connect with you through this item.
  • To benefit from all the advanced features of Kumbooka, we recommend to always use the action-box.
  • Once you have gone through the option in the action-box, it will automatically close.  When this happens, you can simply exit the popup window by clicking either the close button in the top right corner of the popup box, or the cancel button on the bottom right.  Please note, do not click the update button if you have only used the action-box.
  • Below the action-box, you will see all the lists you have created.  If you check one of these lists by clicking in the check-box immediately to the left of the list name, and then click the update button, you will have added this item to the list selected.

Finding items you own BACK TO TOP

Finding your stuff on Kumbooka can be as simple as typing a barcode.  Start by clicking your mouse cursor into the search box.

There are two search boxes on Kumbooka and you can use either one.  The search boxes can be found at the top of every webpage on Kumbooka

or on the left hand side of the bottom toolbar.

Now you've located the searchbox, try typing a barcode from something you own. Start with something simple like a book or DVD.  The barcode needs to be in an 11, 12 or 13 numerical character format such as 5010356670005.

ISBN numbers from the barcode on a book will work, as will a UPC codes from a barcode on a DVD.

No barcode - no problem.  Just type a keyword into the search box to find your stuff. This could be anything from the name of an artist or author to the title of a movie, try it out now.
